It’s time for the Boggy Creek Cinematic Universe to expand with Return to Boggy Creek! You wouldn’t think a rich film series could be built out of a swampy waterway in Arkansas and some kind of out-of-focus sasquatch guy, and you’d be right!
It began in 1972 with The Legend of Boggy Creek, a “docudrama” (i.e., it’s all made up) about the creature. America immediately caught Boggy Fever (unrelated to the film, just an itchy marsh-based disease) — so naturally a few years later Return to Boggy Creek, this completely unauthorized and unofficial sequel, hit theaters. The original writer and director were so inspired by that, they released an “official” sequel, Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues (as seen on MST3K) a few years after that. The canon is a little confusing, kind of like the Highlander series, but with way more hicks.
Return to Boggy Creek is a surprisingly sweet family tale, starring young Dana Plato (before her Diff’rent Strokes fame) and her mom, played by Dawn Wells (after her Gilligan’s Island fame). The young girl, driven by her unexplained hatred for classmate Renee Davis, takes her younger brothers — one of whom is named T-Fish — out on a dangerous cryptid hunting expedition in the middle of a hurricane. None of the adults around them are capable of making a good decision, so it’s up to the kids and the Skunk Ape to survive the storm while guys with names like Crawfish Charlie get their heads stuck in moonshine jars, and other things of that nature.
