Sherlock Holmes: The Pearl of Death

“Twenty men die for it!” exclaims the poster for The Pearl of Death. What it doesn’t say, is that they all died way before the start of the movie. Still, the body count in this one is pretty high; it’s amazing Watson doesn’t lose count.

This time ‘round, our villain is after Giles Conover, a criminal so ruthless and ingenious, it’s kind of hard to believe Holmes has never mentioned him before, and never will again. And who, apart from the beautiful Naomi Drake and Rondo “The Brute Man” Hatton is assisting Conover? Well, it’s actually Holmes himself who commits an act of Watsonian stupidity that allows Giles to pinch the Borgia pearl in the middle of a crowded museum.

Can Holmes recover the pearl before a half-dozen people are murdered? And will anybody blame him for those murders, which are basically his fault? The answers to those questions are “yes” and “no,” but you’ll have to watch the movie to find out what order they’re in!
