Mike Nelson

Michael J. Nelson is the former host and writer of the Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning Mystery Science Theater 3000. Since that time, he has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows, penned a regular column for TV Guide, and authored best-selling books for both HarperCollins and Abrams.

In 2006 Nelson partnered with Legend Films to found RiffTrax, debuting with a solo commentary track which could be downloaded and played along with the film Road House. It proved a great success and Mike was soon joined by his former co-star/writers Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. Together they have produced more than 150 titles for blockbusters such as Twilight, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Star Trek. They also continue to tackle classic b-movie fare such as Plan 9 from Outer Space, Carnival of Souls, and House on Haunted Hill (which are available as video on demand as well as DVD), as well as many hilarious educational shorts from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.

Mike takes the stage several times a year to perform RiffTrax Live!, which is beamed via satellite to 500 theaters nationwide.

Ghosthouse!!!!   A+...  You really can't go wrong with crappy horror...   and even though I am biased to that type of movie, I think that was one of your best jobs lately...

Voiceguy's picture

First off I just have to say that you guys are Hilarious.  I've been watching you guys since the 90's and you never got old.

Second there is a shocking lack of Video Game based movies.  Who could such awesomely bad movies as

Super Mario Brothers (1993) - "Trust the Fungus"

Dragonball Z: Evolution ("Kamehame-THATSNOTCANON!!-HAAAA")

Mortal Kombat: Annialation (1997) - "Nightwolf: Feel your Animality! "

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale -  "Give me the chicken! "

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) "Fathers always have a weakness for their daughters."

Street Fighter: The Movie - "GAME OVER!!"

Anyway keep up the good work!!

YES!!! CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER IS FINALLY BEING RIFFED!!! My prayers have been answered! Thank you so much for riffing it, Mike!

timservo3000

P.S. I can't wait for you to riff the last two Harry Potter movies! Could you also do the Clone Wars Pilot Movie (include a joke about sand, as well as making fun of Ahsoka) and also Tangled (with maybe Weird Al Yankovic)?

William S Ott's picture

One thing I miss aout the old MST3k vs Rifftrax is the visual gags you could pull off by being on the bottom of the screen...  Ever thought about re-integrating that, at least in the VODs?

BrianMartin's picture

Could you perhaps Riff the "Dungeons and Dragons" movie from 2000? And when will Riffs of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2" be out?

William S Ott's picture

Watch this movie...  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085792/

It is so what you need to do...  I could probably consider my life complete with a VOD Rifftrax of this...  I would make it myself, but I doubt I would be very good at it.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say that I loved your last two live events (definitely not a disappointment, just needed a liquor you can actually taste, and don't despise, to liven it up.) Anyway, just wanted to say I love what you guys do, and would suggest making it clear that your VOD, $9.99 download videos, can be burned to a CD or USB drive and played on both PS3 and XBOX 360 for viewing on the big screen, because $9.99 is more than worth the price for seeing you guys on a proper TV. Just saying, I discovered this fact tonight, watching Sons Of Hercules, and wish I knew it sooner. Looking forward to purchasing more of these VOD gems and attending the live shows.

Happy B-day to the RiffMaster himself, Michael J. Nelson!

Hope to hear you do Captain America: the First Avenger, Mike! Keep up the good funny work!

Hey Mike,

In case you want do Steamboy (which got mixed reviews) as a RiffTrax, here are some joke suggestions:

-Comparing Alfred Molina's character to Darth Vader.

-Make fun of the little girl, Scarlet, who is irritating.

-Anna Paquin jokes

-Do some movie themes such as Gone with the Wind's theme, Raiders March and Superman Theme

-Patrick Stewart jokes

Hope you do it Mike! I enjoy your Riffs!

Animated Tv Shows, Specials and Movies

-My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (S1E01): Friendship is Magic, Part 1 (Rated TV-Y, but has an internet following) (Along with Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy) (Categorized in RiffTrax Shorts) (22 Minutes) (as a vod and/or commentary)

-Steamboy (Rated PG-13) (With Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy, and maybe Weird Al Yankovic) (Maybe in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games, because the movie is set in the United Kingdom of Great Britain) (example of jokes: Steve Jablonsky's music, because he also did Transformers and Gears of War 2 and 3; England jokes [as long as it's not too offensive]; Doing made up songs to Raiders' March [From Indiana Jones Series] and the Superman Theme Song; Anna Paquin voicing a boy in the movie and her career [including True Blood]; doing some jokes in British accents; and some others.)

trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pFVmnnm52w&feature=related

[from The Matrix], or reference V for Vendetta [which he was in with Natalie Portman, who was in Thor], maybe even a panic reaction to Red Skull ripping his flesh mask off, like, "OH MY GOSH!!! OH MY DEAR GOSH!!!!"; and maybe doing a tune to the melody of Raiders March from Indiana Jones [which Joe Johnston worked on the first two as an art director.] [like what Kevin Murphey did in Inception's Rifftrax].)

I'm with you 100% on that suggestion...but why stop there?  Have you seen the ridiculousness of the Dario Argento version.... or even the Robert Englund version?  Travesties!  All of them!

And then there's The Phantom of the Paradise, Phantom of Hollywood, Phantom of the Opera: The porn version.  So many to choose from!  And all so ready to be riffed.

Mike,

Thanks to you, Kevin, and Bill for all the laughter you've given me over the years.  I was and am a huge MST3K fan and now a Rifftrax fan.  Here's hoping much like the Energizer Bunny, you 3 keep going and going.  Keep making us laugh!

I just thought of something great that i'm sure you, kevin, and Bill would really like!! It involves Netflix and the xbox-360. Xbox-360 has the ability to stream Netflix movies and shows that you can watch instantly (which there are an enormous amount of movies and shows to watch instantly). The thing that is great about it is that before you start to watch a movie or show, you can start what is called a "Party" in which you can invite up to a full theaters worth of your friends (even non-friends) on xbox-live. And as long as you have a microphone you can all talk to eachother while watching the movie or show. When i realized this i thought "Gee, i bet the guys from MST3K would love this b/c they could riff on movies and/or shows, LIVE, with fans that love to hear them!!" So yeah, i just thought you might like to know that, b/c it would mean the world to me to be in the same party as you guys listening to what you do best while watching the movie you tear apart!! (P.S. long time fan. I been watching MST3K since i was 4 years old).

SuzyG's picture

I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum for this comment, but you guys should riff that phenomenon of melodramatic bad taste, "The Phantom of the Opera". Its got a trifecta of badness: 1) The acting of Gerard Butler 2) The direction of Joel Schumacher 3) The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Here's a fan who'd love to hear this riff!

It's Thanksgiving, and I thought it appropriate to let you, Mr. Mike Nelson, know how very, very thankful I am for you. Without exaggeration, you have been one of the most important people in my life and I honestly don't think I would have made it this far without you. Please allow me to explain, and I hope Mike can find the time to read this, or an appropriate party can get this (or at least the jist of it) to him.

In a nut shell, I came from an extremely unstable, drug-addicted, and abusive home. Almost every day of my life, either me, or my mother were getting brutally beaten by my father. That is to say, the days one or both of them weren't in jail or just flat out adbandoned me for weeks at a time. You'd think them being gone would be better, but that usually meant I got shulled off to some sketchy foster home, or ill-funded youth authority home. And I want to tell you this Mike, the only thing in the world louder than the deafing crack of domestic violence, is the laughter I would get from watching MST3K. Walling up in my room, and turning up the volume louding so I couldn't hear the fighting was the only thing that made it OK. I've lived with severe depression and PTSD since those times, but just hearing your voice, or you cracking a joke or something brings me happiness and comfort like nothing else can. The entrance music brings a smile cheek to cheek, because I know for at least an hour or so, life won't be too bad. I've never met you, and I don't know you as a person, but I really don't think I've had a better friend than you Mike. I could always, always count on you, and you've never let me down. Not even once. And I just wanted you know  how much that means to me, and that you're appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving Mike. I hope you and your family have a very happy and safe holiday. Thanks for taking the edge off life for me. I'm honestly not sure I wouldn't have gotten this far witout you.

God bless

Dann

So my husband, his four brothers and I have been huge fans of both MST3K and riff trax since childhood.  We know you probably watch a lot of movies and that this one has probably come your way before, but we would love to hear you make it the most awesome movie of all time.  Especially since a movie named Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus should be so metal!  I feel like this is something you would love even if you couldn't create a trax for it.  In any case I am going to finish this lovely bottle of wine to help me make the cackling of my husband and his brothers bearable.  Thanks for making so many movies better.

Hi Mike. You guys should put your Rifftrax on iTunes. I have a bunch of friends with ipods that love Rifftrax but their parents won't order Rifftrax for them. It will open up a whole new audience (teenagers). Teens now watch this stuff ffrom youtube. Look of "Best of Rifftrax" if you don't all ready know. The movies will still cost about the same thing but now kids ccan get them on their own free will. This would be so boss.
You guys are really funny.
Do the 3rd Lord of the Rings and the rest of those Pirate movies (you can do alot with Davy Jones).

Peaky's picture

Hello, Mike!

Do you remember this show on TV that you used to work on, Mystery Science Theater 3000, I think it was called? More specifically, do you remember a movie that the show once featured, called Pod People? Even more specifically, do you remember how during the opening and closing credits there played footage of drunken hillbillies chasing an even more drunken alien through the woods? Well, that footage was from a film called *The Galaxy Invader*, and the worst mistake the brave men, women, and puppets who worked on MST3K ever made was not featuring that movie on the show.

Because the movie in question is bad, really, really, really bad, and you know what, I'm not even going to bother holding back anymore and call it the SINGLE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE. We're talking worse than the Emmerich-Delvin Fraudzilla bad, WORSE than Coleman Francis bad, WORSE than the Star Wars Holiday Special bad, WORSE than Manos: The Hands of Fate bad, a movie so wretched, so hideous that it would make Rick Sloane cry. And if there were more formatting options available for me to use while typing this, you can bet I would have used them.

Don't believe me? Go ahead, watch it, dear Mike, and try not to wish even the tiniest bit of physical harm against Don Dohler, the writer/director/bit actor/filmmaker/etc. of this all-out attack on sanity, hope, beauty, art, and belief in the good of the human race (and all other species, I might add): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6504570739792576347&ei=eC4kS_-R...

I do have plans to create a commentary track of my own sometime in the future, but neither I nor my friends have the experience or skills to tackle such a horrid piece of straight-to-video-ness as this at the present time. You, sir, and the rest of the crew of MST3K are our last hope for survival. So please -- riff this movie (and it's in the public domain [unfortunately for the public], so you could release it on DVD! ;-) )!

Should you decide to take on this task, then I wish you good luck. Even you may need it.

By the way, when I finally finished the film (years after stopping it because I couldn't take it anymore, and this is from someone who sat through the whole 26 hours of the Star Wars Holiday Special), it put me into a depression for a couple of hours.

Also, I don't mean to sound cynical or pessimistic; I strive to remain hopeful and optimistic in life, because quite frankly, it's much more fun and healthy to be so.

Once again, good luck. If anyone can conquer The Galaxy Invader, you can!

Yours truly,
Peaky

P.S. Did I mention I hate *The Galaxy Invader*? Just asking.

I would just like to say that I am such a huge fan. I believe I have over 80 dvds, plus I just bought five more. I watch/listen to MST3K at work all day, and I fall asleep listening to them as well. If there was any way in the world I could get something autographed, hell, I don't care if it's a used dryer sheet, I would die a happy woman. Of course, dying would suck, but I would clutch that dryer sheet in my hand and make all the survivors jealous. If they steal it, then I would be fucked. Not only would I not have an autograph, I would start to stink.

I love you!!! But not in a creepy way.

You guys need to riff this movie. It's completely terrible.

Features female wrestlers, a man who gets a heart transplanted from an ape who then turns into a... bloody ape. It is a video nasty but insanely hilarious by itself. Not enough old bad movies.

Hi, Mike!

I saw the Plan 9 Live event here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana tonight. I haven't laughed that hard since... well, since MST3K was still on the air. It made me realize even MORE just how much I've missed y'all. I was pleased to see that I was not alone in that sentiment. The theater was FULL of people of all ages--from 12 to mid-50's. Everybody had a great time and were all glad to learn of RiffTrax. You definitely picked up some new customers tonight!

I just donated $20. I'll be donating more soon, and on a regular basis. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE LAUGHS and keep up the good fight!

Cheers!
