Constant stream of (sometimes risque) laughs

Speedway Squad offer up another solid collection of joking around while watching a movie. Their iRiffs don't follow the same general formula as most riffing groups. As I think I said in my review of their first iRiff (for "Mission to Mars"), it's more like listening to a group of college guys after surviving a week of tests, and they're now ready to blow of some steam. It's three guys sounding like they're saying whatever pops into their mind while watching some movie, perhaps after a few beers. The commentary is more R-rated than it needs to be (particularly when watching a movie like "The Last Starfighter"), but if that doesn't bother you too much than most of the banter is pretty funny. Some of the lines are making fun of the movie, some of them are very short quotes from other movies, and some of it might just be something of interest that they're reminded of based on what's on the screen. ___p___ They do a good job at sounding relaxed and like they're just sitting back while watching the show, and yet all the technical details are handled quite well. They can fire off a lot of sarcastic comments without seeming mean-spirited about any of them. While I (personally) would prefer a track where the lines stayed in PG-13 territory, pretty much all of their comments are funny and they do generally fit the context in the movie (as opposed to just saying things for shock value). I'm rating this as 5-stars, although in my own copy I might delete a few parts (particularly the part before the movie begins, some of which would be more appropriate for "The Last Tango in Paris" than "The Last Starfighter"...).

To expand on that...

I meant to include more of an observation on the "Constant stream" that I mentioned in my previous comment. This group says their podcast/riffing is not scripted, and it certainly has the feel of a group of guys just saying whatever comes to mind. At the same time, they do manage to provide an almost constant stream of jokes or funny observations, so I have to believe that they must put some time into preparing for riffing one of these movies. The riff for "Enemy Mine" felt like they felt a little short of material, but for "Mission to Mars" and this "Last Starfighter" riff, they kept the entertainment going for the entire movie. There were no obviously-dead spots where I was left thinking "Oh, they should have said *something* at this point".

unscripted

hey thanks for all the great feedback! and yeah... we get kinda "R-rated" but we want to be natural. EVERYTHING is unscripted - in fact you are correct that we had maybe a bit of a challenge with Enemy Mine but we have only ever seen bits of it so it was tougher - but MAN - that film is a SLOOOOW stink. So it's hard to keep it rolling. Our podcast is also unscripted, R-rated but it's popculture current events centered. We cover everything...

I'll review the EM sync problem - it MAY be a copy issue - maybe my DVD had different cuts? I dunno.
Thanks for listening - we have a few more in the hopper to do - so please look for 'em!
Cheers!
