FireRiffs Presents: Superman Returns
FireRiffs Presents: Superman Returns

In 2006 Bryan Singer boldly tried to rekindle the Superman movie franchise... and failed miserably.

Brandon Routh pics up the torch from Christopher Reeves and dons the blue tights (hopefuly not the same pair) as the Man of Steel.  After a five year absence Superman returns from a visit to the remains of Krypton to find that Lois has moved on without him and now has a son and a new man.  Of course being the man of intergrity he is he immediately begins stalking her and trying to persuade her to leave her fiance.

Meanwhile Lex Luthor (played by Kevin Spacey who is desperately trying to convince us that he's Gene Hackman) has been released from prison and by sheer coincidence has begun his plan for world domination at the exact same time Superman returns.  His plan:  swindle an old rich lady out of her money, take her boat to the oddly unsecured fortress of solitude and find out if there is anything evil he can do with crystals.  It's a rather vague plan and leaves one with the question of what he would do if they were only good for making goblets and fine butter dishes.  As luck would have it though, he discovers that with a crystal, some water and a little love he can grow his very own continent.  And you thought Chia  Pets were fun!  So Lex decides to do just that and seems to get a thrill out of knowing that he will kill millions... no BILLIONS of people in the process!

Can Superman stop Lex?  Will Lois file a restraining order against the Man of Steel?  And why in the world is Parker Posey's character dressed like she just stepped out of the 1940's?  Find out all this and more (okay, we never actually find out what the deal with the outfit is) as I attempt to make Superman Returns palatable in my very first iRiff!

The NTSC file is now perfectly synced.  If you already own this it should be in your list of files.  PAL will be replaced ASAP.

All of a sudden, a decent movie!

Seriously, I'm a fan of any movie with super powers and a villain-like character, which would put Superman right up my alley, but I have to say it was more enjoyable with the commentary. Superman cast in the role as super-stalker! Lois lets Supes know on his death bed that he owes her 5 years of child support. OK enough with the spoilers. It had sufficient parts witticisms, comedic timing, and yes super powers. The movie itself is long but there is a reason its being riffed (what can you expect?). Over

Thanks

Thanks Magilla. I appreciate your feedback.

Good riffing, a few minor technical issues

I thought this was a good job at riffing a rather dumb movie. In some ways I feel bad watching this movie, as several of the actors really did a good job at acting out situations which must have given them headaches when they read the scripts. But there are a lot of dumb parts to this movie, so it is a good target for riffing. ___

Most of the technical issues where handled extremely well on this track, although there are a few lines which are intentionally delivered loudly, and those lines are delivered loud enough that you can tell the sound is being clipped off. And there is a slight drift in this track, in that it occassionally jumps a few seconds out-of-sync with the movie. But most of the jokes work well even when they are a few seconds off, so IMO this is a minor issue. And there are a few places where he trips up in the middle of a line, which is noticeable partially because most of the lines are delivered smoothly and quite well. ___

The riff track has plenty of riffs, with some variety in the types of riffs. Probably my favorite one being where the Lois' son is having trouble breathing because he's nervous, and Doug goes "Don't make me asmatic, you won't like me when I'm asmatic!". I've listened to this several times (mainly while trying to figure out the sync issues), and it remains entertaining after multiple listens. There's some room for improvement here, but I'll give it a strong 4-star rating. Pretty close to a 5.

oops

Oops, I should have said Scott there. I switched browser tabs to look up the iRiffer's name, and I must have switched to the wrong tab. The sad thing is I even remember thinking "Hey, what a coincidence -- that other riff I looking at today was also done by someone named 'Doug'!".

Gracias

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. My apologies for the syncing issues. I think I've figured out how to avoid them in the future. Every time I thought I'd fixed a sync the next time I played it it was off again (partially why I decided not to put this back to $1.99). Highlander 2 seemed synced. When I get my Superman dvd back from one of my friends I 'll see if I can fine tune this one. I also really need a second set of ears to catch delivery issues I missed. Again, thanks for your feedback.

Scott (Doug is a nice enough name but it would be too confusing the change my name at this point in my life)
