iRiffs FAQ

iRiffs FAQ

What’s an iRiff?
An iRiff is a commentary on a video, that you make yourself.  It can be funny like a RiffTrax, or more serious and informative.

Great, then what?
You upload it to RiffTrax.com and sell it to the large fan base that comes to the RiffTrax site each day. Tell your friends about what you did. If people buy it, you make money. It’s your chance to cash in on sharing your take on movies and other video content!

What can I riff on?
You can riff on any video content. Some of the more popular are: movies, tv shows, political videos, classic public domain shorts, sporting events, etc.

Can I sell full movies riffed with my commentary merged with the movie?
Yes, and these sell the BEST. We reserve the right to take down any submission if we receive notice. Here are some tips on how to do a commentary merged with video.

Does it have to be a comedic commentary?
No. iRiffs is a place where you can share your critique or scholarly commentary on any video content as well. But it should be something other people will actually want to pay to hear.

How do I get money from my iRiff?
You get paid 50% of the net revenue generated by your products. We send you a check each quarter that your balance due to you is over $25.

What price should I charge?
The price ranges vary depending on the content.  For RiffTrax MP3 audio commentaries (that get synched up to a DVD), the minimum price you must ask is 75 cents per download.  For short-form content (under 30 minutes) merged with the video, the minimum price you must ask is 75 cents per download, maximum is $4.99.   For long-form content (over 30 minutes) merged with the video, the minimum price you must ask is $1.99 per download, maximum is $14.99.

How do I create a RiffTrax?
There are many different ways to go about this depending on your recording setup, budget and time commitment. We've compiled some tips here.

How do I create a video with the riffing embedded into it?
We have created a step-by-step guide to creating your own video with commentary. Click here.

What format are the iRiff videos?
We convert all iRiff videos to an mpeg-4 AVI, which is compatible with a variety of software players and devices. If you have trouble viewing these files, consider downloading the ffdshow codec pack and / or the free VLC Player. (Note that if you follow the tech specs listed on the Upload page - once you have started creating your product - your video will skip transcoding, as long as it matches our requirements!)

How should I submit my stuff?
It's easy! Just go to www.rifftrax.com/iriffsignup and follow the instructions! Once you've signed up you can start submitting iRiff products.

What elements will I need to upload once iRiffs goes live in October?
A check list of everything you need can be found at the bottom of this page.

Will I need a RiffTrax Account?
Yes, you will.  You can populate your group (or riffer) page with a profile and a picture/logo if you desire to let your fans know who you are and why they need to buy your iRiff.

Who owns my submission?
You still own it. And you are free to sell your content anywhere else at the same time. Featuring it on the RiffTrax site is non-exclusive.  Be aware that your iRiffs content will be offered DRM Free.

How will I see how much I have sold?
We will be emailing reports every quarter that'll include how many sales you've made, and how much money you're getting. You will also have access to a "Reports" page in your area that will show you an up-to-the-minute tally of your earnings.

Do I need to keep a backup of everything I upload?
Yes. Generally, we backup all content (including sellable files) on the site. However, in the event of a severe hardware meltdown, we might not be able to salvage everything. It's always best to backup your own content on your hard drive, DVD, thumb drive, etc.

Will I be able to offer a RiffTrax Player .riff file for my iRiff?
We are working on an automated user admin to create your own .riff file for the RiffTrax Player.  Until then, we may be able to make .riff files for you on a case-by-case basis for an additional fee.  Stay tuned for more details and email us if you have any questions.

How will people find my product on the site?
We will provide you with a unique URL for your content. Send it to your friends so they know where to come and buy your product. We will also feature content by genre and rating. The best stuff will be featured on the RiffTrax home page and seen by large audiences.

How do I know if an iRiff is worth watching?
Each iRiff should have a free sample to let you try before you buy (so make sure you provide us with one – we can't do it for you!) You should also look at the star rating, and read any user comments to get an idea if this is something you would find funny or interesting.

Do I really need to submit Tax Information?
Yes, regardless of your unique tax situation, we still need your information on record for our tax purposes. Every submitter must submit a W-9 form during the sign up process. You will only receive a 1099 form at tax time if your earnings are over $600 in that year.
